road trip

road trip

my friend cris invited me to see the belgium grand prix with him

picked me up in his fast, comfy, porsche in ashford at 5am and we took the train from dover to calais, then drove (240 miles)

a couple of hours into our road trip, as we were stopped for congestion ahead, a belgian tree surgeon, who was paying attention to his two children in the back seat of his truck, rear ended us on the E40

giving us (how generous) whip-lash and leaving cris a large, ungainly dent in his sweet ride

took this while details were exchanged

angry words were not exchanged: mainly we were all relieved the kiddas were alright

lewis hamilton was wearing earphones and did not hear me shout 'knob' at him as he whizzed past on a kid's scooter, ignoring all the kids chasing him for an autograph

he IS a talented driver but he IS an unpleasant person

i do speak from experience

was fun to be behind the scenes and spend the day with cris

watched the dramatic start on TVs in redbull team hospitality

then spent the rest of the race between turn 1 (la source) and behind perelli hospitality

weird how the moment the race starts, all the back stage areas start dismantling and packing up everything as quickly as possible

everyone not directly involved in the race pretty much ignoring it

long haul home

long haul home

unfortunately the helicopter forgot to pick us up, so we (cris) had to drive back to calais, delirious

long old round trip

raining: so trains delayed back to blighty

and the nasty english service station (in calais) was rammed and closing

nothing to do but take photos and sing nonsense to myself (and cris) in a delirious manner
